Youth Activities

This 6-1/2 hour course covers safety skills, child care skills, life and business skills; as well as CPR instruction and manikin practice. Space is limited to the first 6 participants to register.
The class will be held at TRC's Activity Center (300 E. US 24/40) in the Activity Room.

Students will review basic stitches, learn how to change colors, and learn how to double crochet.

Materials needed: "K" crochet hook, 2 colors of worsted weight yarn (size 4)

Please register 1 week prior to class.

This is an internet-assisted course.  
Participants must complete the online course through the Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks.  You will not be allowed to participate in the field day if you cannot produce a completion certificate to the instructors at registration in the morning.  You can find this free course online at https://programs.ksoutdoors.com/prg/Programs/Hunter-Education-Certification

Additionally, you will be going on a short hike to a nearby outdoor shooting range located on site.  Please do not bring any firearms.  Guns and ammunition will be provided. 

Dress appropriately for the weather.  The class is in a metal building and if the weather is hot/cold it will be warm/cool in the building.  I suggest dressing in layers.  The shooting range may also be warm/cool/muddy, so wear appropriate shoes/jackets.

Miss Heather is back this Spring and Summer with a series of programs full of imagination, creativity, science, and exploration. Each activity will be available to register for with this registration link!

Monster Rocks 

JUNE 21 | SUMMER KICK OFF | 3 – 6 PM 

Find Miss Heather at the annual Summer Kick-Off at Chieftain Park and paint rocks to look like goofy or spooky monsters! Use your imagination to give each monster its own personality.

Fee: Free while supplies last.

Country Market Still Life

JULY 12 | 1 - 2 PM  [Registration required.]

Description: Set up a still life with fruits, vegetables, or flowers and paint or draw what you see, just like at a country market.

Fee: $10 in-district/ $12 non-district

Texture Trek: Exploring Nature’s Patterns

JULY 26 MESSY DAY OF PLAY | 2 – 4 P [Comes with Mess Day of Play registration.]

Find Miss Heather at the Messy Day of Play at Chieftain Park and create rubbings from leaves, bark, and other natural objects to make a nature-inspired texture collage. Explore how patterns in nature tell a story.

Fee: Free with registration to Mess Day of Play event, while supplies last.

Please make sure you select the right activity while registering! Some activities have fees, some you can find for free at TRC events, and one is a free class sponsored by the Tongie Arts Council. Make sure you are sure of all of the details before registering.

Welcome to TRC's Summer Art Camp!

Ms. Heather is thrilled to host a fun-filled, creative escape for your young artists. This two-day camp is designed for 1st-5th graders. Kids will dive into exciting hands-on projects with clay, printmaking, collage, mixed media, and painting - plus a few surprises along the way! 

From squishing clay to creatin colorful masterpieces, this camp promises imagination, laughter, and discovery at every turn! Give your kids a summer experience in Tonganoxie that will spark their creativity and fill their hearts with joy as we bring back this beloved camp.

This is a FREE golf clinic for children ages 9-14 that will help introduce them to the game and enhance their skills. Receive free instruction from the staff at Sunflower Hills Golf Course. Clubs will be provided if you do not have your own.

Mondays, July 7th - August 4th

*Limited to 20 participants*

Come to the Recreation Activity center for All Ages Bingo! 10 rounds of bingo, prizes for each round, and snacks & drinks provided.

Date: Saturday August 9 | Back-to-School Bingo 

Time: 1 - 3:30 PM

Location: TRC Recreation Center

Fee: $3 per person

Children 14 years or younger must be accompanied by an adult.

Join us at Chieftain Park for an hour of flexibility, balance, strength... and GOATS! 

Goat Yoga Mindy will be bringing her four-legged friends to the park for us to enjoy.

Fee: $20 residents/ $25 non-residents

Age Requirement: 6 years +

The Tonganoxie Track Classic will be a recreational track meet for ages 7-14 years old. Participants can not participate in more than 4 events. Relays count as an event. The 4x100M and the 4x200M relay will only be available to the 11-12 & 13-14 year old age groups. If you select a relay, you must put the other participants for your team in the comments/notes section on your registration. 

Events: 50m dash, 100m dash, 200m dash, 400m dash, standing long jump, softball throw, 4x100m relay, 4x200m relay

Age Groups: 7/8, 9/10, 11/12, 13/14

When: Saturday, August 2nd 

Where: THS Track
